Looking Back at Semester One

Now that we've finished the first semester, I'd like to take a minute to look back and reflect. Often, teachers ask about what topics were the most interesting or fun to study, but I'd like to take a slightly different approach here.

What topic or topics from semester one did you find the most frustrating? Be clear in why you're choosing what you're choosing... ... was it frustrating because it was difficult? Not well explained? Boring? Something else? I'm curious to see if we notice any recurring ideas. Please post in the comments section!

  1. I thought that friction was the most frustrating section. It was a little hard to remember the right type to use in different situations.

  2. I personally found the section we did on adding non-perpendicular vectors the most frustrating topic we covered in the first semester. I feel this way because it is a very tedious process. Although adding non-perpendicular vectors is not the most complicated of the things we have learned, it is very repetitive in that it requires resolving multiple vectors, only to create another vector whos components must then also be solved for. It is a very long, approximately 6 step process, and i found it rather laborious.

  3. Looking back on the semester, I found the forces to be the most frustrating section. I didn't have a hard time with the math too much, but the word/concept problems were hard for me. Maybe, if we could've talked more about the situations and not do as many math examples, the word problems wouldn't have been such a challenge.

  4. I agree with D Brown, I still find some difficulty in depicting whether static or kinetic friction is involved in situational story problems. I think it was explained well, but maybe spending more time on the topic would help in the future.

  5. i found vectors overall to be the most complicated. it was also kind of boring which led me to doze off a few times. if there was something more involving for us students to do during that chapter, i probably would have been able to focus more on the subject.

  6. I would have to agree with Alana's opinion. I think the section where we covered adding together two non-perpendicular vectors together to find the resultant was the most frustrating. I also agree with the reasoning she gave as to why it has been the most frustrating. It is not because it is difficult, it is just because the process takes a great deal of steps, and it can become very confusing if you accidentally lose your place at a certain point. I do not think that it was frustrating because of any of the reasons that Mr. Bearss gave, but simply because of the time that it took to complete a problem. With this certain topic I guess the best thing that a person can realize is that what has to be done, has to be done.

  7. I found adding the non perpendicular vectors to be the most tedious part and probably the least interesting because of the tediousness but in the words of Noah $0.05, what has to be done, has to be done. But what was the most difficult was memorizing all of the formulas, which there aren't many, but I find making acronyms is a big help.

I found the kinematics chapter the most frustrating. I thought this because I hadn't gotten used to the class yet. Also having many various formulas to use was very tough for me. It seemed like I never picked the right one. Another reason I found it most frustrating was the chapter was very long so it seemed like it was never going to end. In the end, I just didn't like it as much as something like the force problems.

  9. I thought the hardest parts of the semester was kinematics and projectile motion.I had the trouble calculating postion vs. prime. In projectile motion I had trouble remembering how to solve them correctly.

  10. The most frustrating topic for me was, like Brennan, was kinematics and projectile motion. I kept using the wrong equations for the problems. But mostly I felt like I didn't have a deep understanding of what we were really trying to solve.

  11. I had the most trouble with coordinate systems. I could never figure out the direction correctly and didn't really understand what I was doing.

  12. I agree with D Brown and Nick P on the entire Friction section being confusing because of the fact its hard to memorize how to solve each of them, but on the upsides of this class I like this internet blog thing because it gives the students and teachers a way to communicate and its a good way to learn from everything that goes on in class, good idea Mr. Bearss

  13. The most difficult part of the first semester for physics was the beginning of the chapter about vectors. For me, the way problems were worded confused me a lot when it came to figuring out which direction the vector was facing in. Also to be honest learning about pendulums was also frustrating because in trig we were learning about periods, vertical shift, and all that stuff at the same time. It was very confusing to distinguish the way to solve the problems because the subject were the same thing, but taught so differently. Lastly, it would of been more fun if we had more labs that were directly related to the subjects we were learning instead of a lecture or worksheet all the time. I do have to agree with Kyle though that this blog does make physics more interesting because many of the posts have relation to the real world.

  14. I really found that projectile motion has been the hardest for me. I never quite remember what goes where... Generally I can find a process to figure out the problems, but I guess I just haven't quite gotten a grip on the process that well yet. I also struggled at the very beginning of the entire Physics class due to the memorization of the formulas we first learned, though that one was likely my fault.

  15. I think the most difficult section was the horizontal and vertical projectile section. I thought the concept was particularly difficult to understand and there were several formulas to remember. Also the concept of hangtime and time to peak was a little confusing to remember. I think when you throw angles into the equation and sine and cosine that also makes it a little more difficult.

  16. The most frustrating topic for me was kinematics and projectile motion. I kept using the wrong equations for the problems and i never under stood what was going on.

  17. Thanks for your comments. We will be doing more labs and projects in second semester, so hopefully things are looking up!

  18. I also found the adding of non perpendicular vectors frustrating. I found it frustrating because it was difficult for me to remember each of the steps that go in to solving the problem.
