Angry Birds, available for a multitude of devices from Rovio. |
It seems as though the talk of the school's hallways this holiday season is Angry Birds. I've heard countless students discussing playing the game on their new devices. To be honest, the popularity of the game is a bit of a mystery to me... ... I just don't find it all that much fun. I think puzzle games like Cut the Rope or Where's My Water are more challenging and fun, and they make better use of a muti-touch environment. For simple arcade fun, it's tough to beat Fruit Ninja. Perhaps the popularity of Angry Birds is not because of its awesome gameplay, but rather because of its ubiquity--one can play Angry birds on every make and model of computer or smart phone.
In any case, we are currently studying projectile motion in our physics class. If you think about it, the birds (and their "weapons") from Angry Birds can be thought of as projectiles. They fly through the air along parabolic trajectories. That got me thinking... ... what other "classic" games are variations of a similar idea? It seems like many games' primary control feature is that the player adjusts the elevation of some type of projectile launcher.
A few questions for consideration... ...
- Do you like Angry Birds? Is it a great game?
- Should we consider the angry birds to be projectiles (from a strict physics sense)? Explain.
- What other games have you played where you are mainly adjusting the angle of inclination (elevation) of a projectile launcher? Are these fun games?
1. Angry birds is a good game, but quickly can get boring. 2. Angry birds are not projectiles because some birds can accelerate while already in motion. I'm not sure of any other games like angry birds
ReplyDeleteGood point about the birds accelerating. That said, can some birds be considered to be projectiles? And, let's not be too literal about looking for games like Angry Birds. I mean, are there other games that are alternate takes on the idea of aiming a projectile?
ReplyDeleteAngry birds is a good game, but after playing it so much you can get bored of it easily. For another game couldn't pinball be consider as one?
ReplyDeleteAngry birds is kind of addicting. In a way, the game Tiny Wings could be considered a game with launching something. And yes I do believe that the Angry Birds could be considered projectiles.
ReplyDelete1. I don't really like Angry Birds. It can be a great game if you are into it.
ReplyDelete2. I believe it could be considered projectiles
3. Angry Bombs and Stupid Zombies. I just don't prefer those kinds of games.
i do believe angry birds is projectiles and its also very addicting but once uve played it alot it does get boring. also a games that works like projectiles is called dragon fly
ReplyDeleteangry birds is a game dealing with projectiles.
ReplyDelete1. i dont really like the game, mainly becasue i am just get upset becasue its hard..
2. it can be viewed as dealing with projectiles because if you knew the certain angle to launch the bird in order to hit the pig, you would probably win constantly,
3. another game ive played is cut the rope, and you have to get candy to swing a certain way and cut it into a monsters mouth, could that be considered a projectile?
1.Angry birds is great game.
ReplyDelete2.The birds are projectiles because they move in the way a parabola is formed. Launched from one point and moving at a constant speed until they hit the ground. Although you can get different birds that can different things.
3.Other games that you have to adjust the elevation are shooting games like call of duty. When you are throwing grenades you adjust the elevation to determine how far you want to throw it. I actually do enjoy this game a lot.
1. Angry birds is a great game and I enjoy playing it.
ReplyDelete2. I think the birds are projectiles because you have to figure out what angle to fling them in order to successfully hit and kill pigs.
3. Angry birds is the only game i tend to play
1.I don't par5ticualrly enjoy the game, but it is something to pass the time with.
ReplyDelete2.The birds can be considered prjectiles because depending on the angle you launch them at, it tells you where it will land.
3. I have also played games that use prjectiles and they were fun but the names have slipped my mind at the moment.
1. Personally, I'm not a big fan of angry birds, I mean I guess it can get addicting if you're trying to beat a certain level, but would i call it great? not exactly.
ReplyDelete2. I would definitely consider the birds to be projectiles because the process has all the basic components of a projectile: an acceleration, a time, a maximum height and a range, and with the proper given measurements, like the angle the bird is being launched at and the initial velocity, they can all be found.
3. I cant remember any specific other games using projectiles but im sure there are many.
1. I think Angry Birds is a great game and very fun to play. Though, once you play through a good amount of levels, it gets rather tedious.
ReplyDelete2. I believe the birds shouldn't be considered projectiles because of constantly changing velocity's.
3. As of other games like Angry Birds, the only one that comes to mind is Crush The Castle, however the game's mechanics are slightly different.
I do enjoy Angry Birds, however i wouldnt put it on my "Fav 5"
ReplyDeleteIn some cases no, for example, the yellow bird can accelerate midflight. This is a situation which would never occur in the real world.
When i was younger, before the days of angry birds another game was on the app store called, Crush the Castle. It was the same concept except with less variation, also it was more strictly based on Physics.
1. it is a decent game but I would not play it for hours on end.
ReplyDelete2. yes because many birds change velocity over time or when a different force acts upon them. Also the topple effect of energy running through the buildings is connected to physics.
3. Civiballs is another game where you cut the chain and get the colored balls into the right slots. They swing, roll, and fall using physics( friction, gravity, ect).
1. I believe angry birds is an alright game, though it does get boring from time to time.
ReplyDelete2. They are projectiles because when you change the angle they are thrown at they go just like you throw a ball. They go to a certain height and then come back down to hit the bricks.
3. There are many games that actually have you have to think about physics. Civilball (a game were you cut a rope and have to get it it in the cup) and Sugar, Sugar ( a game that has sugar come out of the comma and you have to draw lines to get the sugar into the cup). Both games are hard but kinda fun, except make you mad sometimes.
1. it can be an enjoyable game if you have some time to kill. But not just whenever for fun.
ReplyDelete2.some of the birds can be considered projectiles because after they are released they have no other force acting on them
3. ishoot is a projectile game in which u shoot missiles at another tank
1. Yes, I greatly enjoy playing Angry Birds. It is just difficult enough to keep an interest in trying to beat your score without being too easy to win.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that the birds are projectiles. This is because they are launched out of the sling-shot at the pigs.
3. I cannot think of any other games that involve shooting projectiles.
1. No i have never really enjoyed the game Angry birds, i just dont think it is that fun.
ReplyDelete2.Yes i do think that the birds can be considered projectiles because of the way they can be launched at different angles, from an intial velocity to a final velocity, from a certain height, and to a certain distance away.
3. Another game that has "projectiles" is called Bunny Shooter..in which you launch arrows at bunnies & the arrows would be considered the projectile.
1) personally i dont find angry birds to be that much fun. i think it has become such a popular topic thats why more people keep downloading and talking about it.
ReplyDelete2)we should consider angry birds as projectiles. in order for you to hit the boxes and get the other birds you have to angle your angry bird at a certain angle. Where the bird lands depends on the angle you start, i guess the initial speed(but you dont have the option for that), and whether air resistance is a factor. Thats exactly what we are studying right now
-I like angry birds but its good for like the first week you have it.
ReplyDelete-Yes they are projectiles because you have to slingshot birds at a certain angle to destroy the pigs but once you shoot certain birds you cant perform any forces on them once youve already shot them. those birds are projectiles. but the special birds that you can do something too arent projectiles.
-Yes theres a game called sugar, sugar. the object of the game is to make the sugar fall at a certain angle so it goes in the coffee cup. Yes this game is very addicting.
1. Angry Bird lovers out there.. i really hope you don't get mad at me for this but i've actually never even played angry birds before. I watched someone play it once and I don't think it was that great.
ReplyDelete2. I can't really say I have a lot of knowledge about this game but from what i watched it seems to me like these would be considered projectiles. You can change where you aim them and when they go up and fall back down, they act the same way projectiles do.
3. I can't really think of another game that has the same idea of projectiles, bu tthen again I haven't played many games at all.
Thanks for all the comments this week!
ReplyDeleteYale 13....i havent played either and really dont understand why theres a big deal being made of it. Just thought i would throw that out there!
ReplyDelete-no i do not like angry birds and i do not think its a great game.
ReplyDelete-yes the birds are a projectile because you have to use different angles to get the birds towards the tower.
-i dont know any games that deal with projectiles at this moment but there are some other games that have to deal with projectiles.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of angry birds, but I know some friends I would definitely call addicted to it. I do think the birds count as projectiles. They act a lot like the objects we could shoot in that one program we did a worksheet on in the computer room in class, I'm not sure what it was called. I'm not familiar with many other games involving legit projectiles, but in that game where you bounce balls off a movable platform and try to hit "boxes" above, the balls could be conisdered projectiles. I think some war games with weapons also probably involve projectiles. I'm not sure what the names of any of these games are though, and I don't personally find them addicting.
