The winter solstice has come and gone (on December 22, 2011) for us. The solstice marks the shortest day of the year. It might come as surprise, then, to learn that December 22 was neither the day of the latest sunrise nor the earliest sunset. This seems counter-intuitive, doesn't it? To see what's going on here, let's try to answer a few questions. So that more can participate, please limit your response (at least initially) to just one question.
- What was the date of the earliest sunset for Port Huron (in December, 2011 or January, 2012)? At what time did the sun set on this date?
- What was the date of the latest sunrise for Port Huron (in December, 2011 or January, 2012)? At what time did the sun rise on this date?
Do a search for the word "analemma" and read about it.
- What causes the analemma?
- How is the analemma related to the earliest sunset and latest sunrise?
I did some research, and I believe the latest sunrise will occure on January 5, 2012.
ReplyDelete*THe latest sunrise on Janurary 3, 2010 was Sunrise: 8:01 AM
ReplyDelete*Analemma is caused by the tilt of the earth's axis, it is related to the rise and set times because they become more exaggerated the closer we are to the equator. At the poles, the analemma has no effect on sunrise and sunset times.
1. The earliest sunset in December 2011 for Port Huron was at 4:55 p.m on December 5th-14th.
ReplyDelete2.The latest sunrise in December 2011 for Port Huron occurred on December 30th and 31th at 8:01 a.m.
1. The earliest sunset in December 2011 for Port Huron was at 4:55 p.m on December 4th-13th
ReplyDelete2. The latest sunrise in December 2011 for Port Huron was at 8:01 a.m on December 29th-30th

1. A combination of the changing speed of the Earth in orbit and the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to its orbit.
2. the axis tilt and varying orbital speed conspire to make the sun drift in such a peculiar pattern is a herculean exercise in spacial perspective
The latest sunrise in December 2011 for Port Huron occurred on December 30th and 31th at 8:01 a.m.

There are two primary causes for the analemma.
1)The tip of the Earth's axis (a.k.a the obliquity of the ecliptic.)
2) The non-circular shape of the Earth's orbit about the sun (a.k.a the Orbital eccentricity.)
1. Two effects are what cause the analemma: the Earth is tilted on its axis 23.5° in relation to the sun and the Earth orbits in an elipse, not a circle.
ReplyDelete2. It is related to the sunrise and sunset times because they are much different the closer we get to the equator due to the tilt of the earth's axis. The analemma has no effect at the poles, the sun looks to be in the same spot.
Analemma is the figure 8 shape traced in the sky (from a location on Earth) of the sun's plotted position at the same time each day over the course of a year.
ReplyDelete1) Analemma is caused by both the changing speed of the earth and the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to its orbit.
2)The latest sunrise and earliest sunset do not occur on the winter solstice because the day of the winter solstice is not when the sun is at its lowest point on the figure 8, or its highest.
-The Sun will appear at its highest point in the sky, and highest point in the analemma, during summer. In the winter, the Sun is at its lowest point. The in-between times generate the rest of the analemma pattern.
ReplyDelete-The analemma is caused by the changing speed and the tilt of the earth.
The latest sunrise in January 2012 was January 3rd/4th at 8:01 am
ReplyDeletethe earliest sunset in port huron december 2011 was december 3rd through the 13th and the latest sunrise was december 30th and 31st at 8:01 a.m an analemma is caused by a changing of speed and the tilt of the earths axis. at the poles the analemma has no affect on the sunrise or sunset at the poles.
ReplyDelete-The latest sunrise for Port Huron already happened on December 30th at 8:01 am (that means i was still sleeping)
ReplyDeletethe earliest sunset was at 4:55 p.m, on december 14th, (so i felt like i should be sleeping!)
- an analemma is cause by the earths tilt and change in speed. this happens differently in both the summer and the winter, bwteen the two key points, and figure eight shaped pattern is formed.
1. The latest sunrise in Port Huron, Michigan occurred on December 30th at approximately 8:01 in the morning. On December 14th at around 4:55 p.m we had our earliest sunset in our little city.
ReplyDelete2. An analemma is caused by the earth tilted 23.5 degrees in relation to the plane of its orbit around the sun, and because the earth does not orbit in a circle but rather in a elipse.
The earliest sunset in Port Huron in January 2012 is the 1st day when the sunset was at 5:05.
ReplyDeleteAn analemma is caused by the earths tilt in relation to its orbit around the sun.
1) An analemma is a scale shaped like a figure 8, sshowing that declination of the sun and the equation of time for each day of the year. it is casued by a combination of the changing speed of the Earth in orbit and the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to its orbit.
ReplyDelete-The earliest sunset in December 2011, in Port Huron was on December 5th at 4:55 p.m.
ReplyDelete-The latest sunrise in December 2011, in Port Huron was on December 31st at 8:01 a.m.
An analemma is a curve representing the angular offset of the Sun from its mean position on the celestial sphere as viewed from another celestial body relative to the viewing body’s celestial equator. An analemma happens, or can be traced by plotting the position of the Sun as viewed from a fixed position on the Earth at the same clock time every day for an entire year.
